Why select, Indonesia for retirement or an extended stay?

ECONOMY

Indonesia is the largest country in Southeast Asia and is one of the emerging market economies of the world. As a middle-income country and member of the G20, Indonesia is classified as a newly industrialized country. Already the 16th biggest economy, research by McKinsey about Indonesia’s economic outlook suggests that the Indonesia economy is progressing to become the world’s 7th largest by 2030. Indonesia’s robust economic development and expanding population is the main factor.

Indonesia is also part of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), which is composed of eleven countries (Brunei, Myanmar, Cambodia, Timor-Leste, Laos, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam) offering impressive diversity in religion, culture, and history. This allows easier and cheaper travel within the borders and lower tariffs for imported goods.

safety

Indonesia is a prolific user of social media and is modern. Unlike some other neighboring countries, the nation prides itself on having a safer lifestyle. It respectfully restricts spread of material related to terrorism and racial violence, as well as pornography and child abuse.

health

A warmer climate can lead to a healthier lifestyle in a number of ways. First, more exposure to the sun increases your Vitamin D levels. These contribute to cancer prevention and increases your energy levels and make your bones stronger. You will be highly motivated to exercise, or just get up and go, when it’s nice outside. The couch and TV just look a little less appealing when the weather is good.

food

Indonesia is a country that is blessed with fertile land. Various tropical fruits, such as mangoes, guavas, bananas, and papayas grow in abundance. Legend has it that Indonesia is also known as heaven on earth because of its fertile soil. When someone throws papaya seeds in the yard, for example, soon a papaya tree will flourish. Most of the regular vegetables are also home grown and delivered to the market on the same day. Popular seafood in Indonesian cuisine, among others, are tuna, mackerel, pomfret, wahoo, milkfish, trevally, rabbitfish, red snapper, anchovy, swordfish, shark, stingray, squid, shrimp, crab, and mussel. Fish farms also include salmon, catfish, tilapia, and cod.

weather

Indonesia is located near the Equator. Therefore, it has a warm, tropical climate that makes it a huge draw for tourists. Average year-round temperature stands at around 26-27°C, with a humidity level of about 85-90%. The ocean temperatures are pleasant throughout the year. There is no need for irrigation systems and heating. One can even survive without air conditioning.

Why select Bali?

Cost of Living

Expect to spend $720 to $2,600 per month on rental costs for a single person living in Bali. Rent would be affordable for families and couples sharing rental costs. It is possible to spend significantly more on a higher-end lifestyle. The higher end of the range really comes down to how expensive it would be for a single person to rent a 3+ bedroom villa ($1,300), without that high-end expense it would be hard to top $2,000 on a generous budget as a solo person living in Bali on a moderate lifestyle.

Expanding Expatriate Population

You will not feel like a stranger. Bali is in many ways an incredibly wonderful place to live and work; and there are many expatriates from all over the world living in Bali who have opened up businesses and made a living. Since tourism has been one of the major sources of income in Bali, a sizable portion of the region speaks a decent level of English.

Culture

Even though some areas in Bali are very tourism oriented and mass tourism in Bali has thrived for many decades, the Balinese have kept their unique and beautiful culture alive and vibrant. … The Balinese culture and Hinduism affect almost every aspect of life on the island. Bali is not a country. Bali is an island within the country of Indonesia. As such, Bali is NOT an independent country. The reason people often mistake Bali for being an independent country is that culturally, and religion-wise, it differs from the rest of Indonesia.

Jay Madhvani

Co-Owner One Stop Bali Services

On a personal note

I have over 40 years of experience in International Business Management in North America, Europe, and East Africa.

Interestingly, I am personally committed to making Bali my home and am married to an Indonesian woman who is a co-owner in the business. This gives me an edge in giving excellent service to the clients. It is very true that North America, Europe, and Australia offers better education, jobs, wages, homes, and lifestyles. However, once a person reaches a retirement age, these places fall short on the quality of life.

My cost of living is half as much as I was accustomed to in the USA. I enjoy the fact that I spend most of my time outdoors either on the beach or meeting exciting people from all over the world.
